BREEDING RULES
The creatures of Ilrea can breed at any time of year, though certain seasons are better than others. Females are pregnant for one season after conception, and cannot breed again for a whole year (for instance, if a gryphoness conceived in the summer, she could not breed again until the next summer). This can be circumvented, somewhat cruelly, by killing the mother's most recent litter, which will cause her to be fertile again. Only litters whose mothers are on Tier 3 can be killed without consent, and the mother may fight to protect her offspring.
If a litter death is rolled, then the dice is rolled again to determine how many young will die. These can either be stillborn, or die sometime before the end of the season from natural causes (predation, illness, exposure, etc)
HYBRIDS
Hybrids were a near-unheard-of occurrence before the Awakening, though now that relations are beginning to improve between the races, hybrid litters are beginning to reappear. However, some are still repulsed by the mixing of blood. There are two kinds of hybrids: Mundane and Magical. Mundane hybrids are crosses between genetically-viable species, such as ligers or coywolves. They are not sterile, though they may be in real life. They are generally the more-accepted kind of hybrid. They do not require a purchased item. Magic hybrids are a rare occurrence, and involve the pairing of two entirely-unrelated species, such as a timberwolf and a lioness. The offspring, which would simply be called a hybrid to avoid increasingly-complex names (leogryphcoyfoxger, anyone?), would share traits from both parents; in this case, the child might have a lupine body, lion claws, and a lion's mane. Magical hybrids require a Hybrid Pass to be conceived or have children themselves.
The Mundane Hybrids are as follows:
CANINE
Dingwolf - Dingo x Wolf
Coywolf - Coyote x Wolf
Anubite - Wolf x Jackal
Coykal - Coyote x Jackal
Afroanubite - African Wild Dog x Jackal
Paintwolf - African Wild Dog x Wolf
Afroding - African Wild Dog x Dingo
Coyfrican - African Wild Dog x Coyote
Coyding - Coyote x Dingo
Dingjak - Dingo x Jackal
FELINE
Servical/Caraval - Male Serval x Female Caracal / Male Caracal x Female Serval
Blynx/Lynxcat - Lynx x Bobcat
Jagupard/Lepjag - Male Jaguar x Female Leopard / Male Leopard x Female Jaguar
Jaglion/Leoliguar - Male Jaguar x Female Lion / Male Lion x Female Jaguar
Tiguar/Jagger - Male Tiger x Female Jaguar / Male Jaguar x Female Tiger
Leopon/Lipard - Male Leopard x Female Lion / Male Lion x Female Leopard
Leoger/Tipard - Male Leopard x Female Tiger / Male Tiger x Female Leopard
Liger/Tigon - Male Lion x Female Tiger / Male Tiger x Female Lion
GRYPHON
Most gryphons tend to fall into one of the multiple breeds, therefore there are no "actual" gryphon hybrids. The few that don't fit a breed standard are usually referred to as mutts or mixfeathers.
- Forcebreeding is allowed but MUST be agreed upon OOC.
- You should fade to black/timeskip when two characters mate.
- Homosexual and/or different-species pairs are permitted, but only heterosexual, compatible-species pairs can produce their own offspring. Sorry guys, nature doesn't work that way. Incompatible couples can, however, receive assistance from Gaia.
- You cannot create a Magical hybrid without a Hybrid Pass, but you can get one without paying by adopting from a hybrid litter. There are two types of hybrids, listed below.
- After breeding, there is a one-season gestation period. A litter for any species will consist of 1-4 children. There is a chance of having stillborns and birth defects (unless you're using a Hybrid Pass), and you must have the birthing thread within one week of the season's start, otherwise they will all be considered stillborn. Young not adopted from a litter can either be stillborn, or simply not exist.
